What I had done
On April 21, 2026, I had a specialized MRI scan of my prostate β a walnut-sized gland that sits below the bladder in men. This type of scan uses magnetic fields (no radiation) and a contrast dye injected into a vein to produce highly detailed images. It also used computer software to help flag areas of concern. This is the gold standard imaging test for evaluating the prostate.

What the scan found
The radiologist identified one area of concern on the right side of my prostate. They assigned it a score called PI-RADS 5 β the highest level on a 1-to-5 scale used to describe how suspicious an area looks on MRI. A PI-RADS 5 means the imaging strongly suggests something significant may be present and that further investigation is needed.
This same area was spotted on a previous MRI I had in May 2021, when it received a PI-RADS 4 score. Comparing the two scans, the radiologist noted the area has grown somewhat over the past five years.
Importantly, the scan shows no signs that anything has spread β the surrounding tissue, lymph nodes, and bones all appear normal.
What this does/does not....mean
An MRI cannot diagnose cancer on its own. It shows that something looks suspicious β but only a biopsy (where a small tissue sample is taken and examined under a microscope) can tell us exactly what is going on. Until that is done, we are dealing with a strong signal that needs to be investigated, not a confirmed diagnosis.
I've decided to move forward and schedule a biopsy. They'll use the MRI images to guide the biopsy needle precisely to the suspicious area π giving us the most accurate information possible about what we are dealing with and what, if anything, needs to be done about it.
